Where It Began

A Cup That Changed Everything

Roger Abbott is a data scientist by trade and a coffee obsessive by nature. He'd spent years chasing the perfect cup — single-origins, micro-lots, competition-grade beans. He thought he knew what great coffee was. Then he went to Java.

In 2018, on a trip through the volcanic highlands of western Java, a farmer in the hills above Bandung handed him a cup of something different. No bitterness. No acidity. Just extraordinary depth — earthy, lightly sweet, impossibly smooth. Coffee processed not by machinery or chemistry, but by nature itself.

It was wild kopi luwak: beans selected by free-roaming civets, naturally fermented during digestion, collected from the forest floor, and roasted in small batches by a family who'd been doing this for generations.
